Advanced Search. Artist Biography by Jody Macgregor. Enter Dope Lemon , Stone's new psychedelic rock project, a band whose motto is "good vibes only". Instead of a three-month recording session involving astronomical sushi bills, recording the Dope Lemon album took more like three weeks spaced across three years. And instead of Rick Rubin's luxurious ranch, Dope Lemon was partially recorded at Stone's home studio, and partially recorded at a friend's studio in Byron Bay. Stone's plans for Dope Lemon also reflect the "good vibes only" motto.

But I'd prefer to do something cruisy, where you're getting back to just playing small shows, and have fun with it a bit more. When asked where the name Dope Lemon comes from, Stone has a pithy response: "We like to make music out of lemons, and we've got a bit of dope in all of us. However, perhaps because Stone has spent so long in the touring bubble, he claims to have never heard it.

After I explain to him how big a hit it's been, his face betrays no recognition. When I haltingly sing some lines from the song, his face continues to remain deadpan. I guess Uptown Folks is about being a symbol of 'getting back to the garden'. I feel like with all the sort of delirium of religion, acquiring possessions, and constantly getting ahead of ourselves, you can lose sight of what we need. I feel like open spaces and getting back to the garden is definitely where we need to go.

Then, word got around that they hadn't split. In fact, they were making a record. And they were doing it with inarguably the biggest producer of the past 30 years, Rick Rubin.

We'd always produced ourselves so we didn't have a big understanding of producers in the world or anything. This guy, Rick Rubin, he wants to work with you and Angus'. She said 'You really have to read this and call this guy back'. I stopped and asked what it was several times. If anyone is going to bring an act out of hiatus, it's Rick Rubin.

He set to work on gently convincing Julia that they should make a record together. I met up with him specifically to tell him that Angus and I weren't gonna get back together. He just kept saying, let's keep hanging out. We'd have really lovely conversations. They still didn't want to reform, but Rick Rubin wanted to make their record.

He wasn't interested in two solo projects. It was an amazing experience for us, because we hadn't talked for a good year. That was really nice. And slowly it unfolded that maybe there was a possibility that we could do something different this time - actually write together, actually collaborate properly.

It was something that we wanted to do on this new record. But things had to be different. The album had a deeper groove than anything they'd done before. Including that element. We ended up liking it. Then, through experimentation in the studio, they kind of evolved into the way the record sounds.

People historically don't normally dance to our music and I would love them to dance to our music. If that could be an aspect to it, that would be great. It was just an idea to try.
